Seek Ye First

DSC00363

Hey guys!  My name is Josh Bendy I’m a senior at Adams and my participant LOG was LOG #77.  Molly and Terry have given me the opportunity to express my views on prioritizing God in our lives.

In our everyday lives many of us struggle with the ability to make time for God, whether that be through prayer, going to church, or just taking time to realize God’s presence at any given moment.  I consider myself a busy person and I continue to struggle with these things just like everyone else.  I used to have a very hard time praying, or finding time to pray.  My issue truly was not the lack of time.  My real problem was the ways in which I prayed.  There are many different ways to pray that I decided to experiment with thanks to the L4G weekend I was a part of last summer.  If you are having trouble with prioritizing God through prayer I encourage you to experiment with different prayer methods and do not let yourself use lack of time as an excuse.  There will be no lack of prayer time when you put God first.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”  To me this verse is telling us to look for God in all things.  This doesn’t necessarily mean to throw everything out the window and only do church related activities, but they are still very important.  I believe that this verse wants us to see God in all things first.  When you go to practice try to notice God’s presence with you.  When you go to the store notice God’s presence first.  When you’re driving realize that God is by your side the entire time.  This does not mean to just seek him in your life, but put him first in your life above all things.  Making God a priority is the easiest thing you can do to grow in your faith.  If you make an effort to acknowledge his presence and make him a priority, he will be with you in everything you do. Seek him first and all will be provided to you.

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you is everywhere.” (Psalm 139:7-12).  No matter where you go, no matter what you do, God will always be at your side.  Whether turning darkness to light or simply looking over you, God’s presence is always apparent.  It’s just a matter of how hard you’re willing to look.

So seek first God’s presence above all else, not necessarily in some special time that you’ve created yourself but in your everyday life. Realize his presence in everything you do.  Whether it be his creations around you or the emotions inside of you.  And know that he will always be there through thick and thin.  Put him first and you can get through anything, for he will guide you through your troubles and push back the darkness.
